The First Penguin Paradigm: Post-Burst Protocol Analysis
With the release of First Penguin in the Burst Protocol set, the Penguin archetype has evolved from a slow "Set-and-Pass" deck into a consistent Synchro-Combo strategy. The new support acts as a foundational bridge, solving historical consistency issues while retaining the powerful disruption of classic Flip effects. Understanding this new "First Penguin Paradigm" is essential for piloting the deck in the modern era.
The revolutionary Level 1 starter. It Special Summons itself as a Tuner, searches a WATER monster (like Penguin Squire) by revealing a Synchro, and sets itself to trigger combo pieces.
The classic power ceiling. Tributes itself to Special Summon two "Penguin" monsters. Now easily accessible via First Penguin's search effect.
Consistency tool. Searches any "Penguin" card and modulates levels to enable hard-casting Emperor if needed.
Level 5 Tuner that Special Summons itself when a monster is Set. Designed to pair perfectly with First Penguin's self-flipping effect.
Level 3 Tuner that bounces an opponent's monster when Special Summoned. Often summoned off Emperor or Garden.
Recursive tool. Revives another "Penguin" when flipped face-up or sent to GY after being flipped.
The lynchpin. Revives itself from GY when a Penguin effect activates and upgrades all "return to hand" effects into banishes.
Classic non-destruction removal. Returns up to 2 monsters; with Nopenguin, it banishes 2 instead.
Backrow removal counterpart. Targets up to 2 Spells/Traps to return (or banish with Nopenguin).
Replaced the fragile "Tribute Emperor" opening with the consistent "Standard Squire" line.
Special Summon First Penguin (treated as Tuner). Activate effect: Discard Nopenguin, reveal Penguin Brave to search Penguin Squire. First Penguin flips face-down.
Because a monster was Set, Special Summon Penguin Squire. Use Squire's effect to flip First Penguin face-up. You now have a Level 5 Tuner (Squire) and Level 1 non-Tuner (First Penguin).
Synchro Summon Penguin Brave. Chain 1 Brave (Set Penguin Soldier from Deck), Chain 2 Nopenguin (Revive from GY). Result: Targeted protection + Banish 2 disruption.
As of the current TCG format, the Penguin archetype is entirely unrestricted, allowing it to operate at full capacity.
